Concrete Overlay Countertop Reveal

So it has finally happened...our countertops are installed!

They are smooth!
They are gorgeous!
And I just want to lay on them, rub my face hands all over them and give them a hug!

Concrete Overlay Countertops

These counters have the look of granite but...Aren't!!

They are actually concrete overlay countertops, which is concrete, skim-coated over some kind of water/mold resistant mdf/particle board and then painted to look like granite (or whatever else you want) and then coated with an epoxy to seal it and make it smooth and shiny.

Before looking into kitchens, I had never heard of this. Our cabinet maker had this in his display room and I (and later Jason) fell in love with it.

There are some Pros and Cons of course.
Some Pros:  The color possibilities are endless, smooth, shiny, nonporous, can be used with an under mount sink (unlike laminate). looks really pretty and like granite but half the cost, Stain resistant (very important for me since food coloring is my best friend..well food colouring and Anna Olsen! They are in a close race for BFF-dom),

Some Cons: scratches (but you can buff it out like a car), those small little feet on countertop appliances can imprint in the countertop, not real stone.

Well, the Pros definitely outweigh the Cons!

I was busy taking pictures this afternoon (when the light was awesome...hence lovely bright first picture and darker following ones) but then Jason got a phone call....from the plumber, who was supposed to come tonight. While talking to him, I got the "You're-not-going-to-be-happy" look.
And I just started to mouthing, "If he's not coming then either his wife is having a baby right-this-instant or his house is on fire! He better be coming!"

Because those are obviously the only things that warrant people speeding and driving like lunatics or not showing up when they are supposed to.

When he got off the phone, I got the bad news. Our plumber is sick (along with all of his kids) so he won't be coming. I sighed in disappointment, but knowing that he was sick and had missed work that day made me feel a little better and helped me get over it quick. He's supposed to come tomorrow.

So Jason continued to photo bomb all the shots, make himself comfy and call his mom.

Isn't he awesome that he calls his mom. What a good boy!
Maybe someday my boys will call me! {sigh}

Hopefully tomorrow that little hole above the sink will have a shiny new faucet protruding from it and my dishwasher will be hooked up and ready to do all the hard work for me again!

Anyway, we are off early in the morning on a trip to Ikea to take care of our butcher block countertop debacle. We'll fill you in on that soon I'm sure! If you need anything from Ikea while we're there just let me know via text or facebook!!

I may go and spill something on my countertops just so I can have an excuse to rub them again!

Love,
Kat

P.S. Thanks for following along. I would love it if you would add me to your RSS feed or follow me on Facebook    I added buttons above our picture on the sidebar to make it super easy and not very painful. I promise there's no needles or awkward hand shakes involved (Only 1 minute of uninterrupted eye contact...no?!! Okay, I guess that's not required.) Maybe one of these days I'll even join twitter and twitter along with the rest of the world and put the cute little bird icon up there too!
